PW Pizza Deschutes Virtual Beer Dinner 2020

I got a very biased opinion when I went to pick up the pizza today as the salad dressing, dessert, and The Blues Pizza were the cashier's favorites. I think I can see why...

Another winner of a salad! Poached Pear with a bold, lemon-sage dressing. (There were even Deschutes pale ale poached pears in the salad!) This might have been the best pairing with the Modified Theory Tahitian Lime Agave "bevy". Not a beer, but a malt beverage. Very refreshing on a hot day. Not to mention all natural, no preservatives, and less than 4 grams of sugar.

I really enjoyed the Chicken Parmesan Pizza, but the IPA was way too hoppy. (My photographer forgot to take a picture.)

The Blues Pizza was definitely another winner - prime rib and blue cheese! The Obsidian Stout was way too overboard as a pairing, but at least Patience got to drink that beer all by herself.

The Key Lime Cheesecake was also just as decadent as the course before. Paired with the Neon Daydream Hazy Ale, the hoppiness was able to cut through the thick creaminess of the dessert.

PW Pizza Deschutes Beer Dinner 2019

Deschutes Brewery was back again with all new beers, with one exception from two years ago.

The Lil' Squeezy beer is just fun to say and of course it was the lighter beer paired with the Big Island Salad. A pineapple dressing helped give it that name.

The Big Island Salad
For a light beer, it still had 40 IBUs, so my favorite beer was probably the second beer, Da Shootz, which only had 25 IBUs. The beer's name was making fun of how often the name of the brewery gets mispronounced, so here it is spelled phonetically! No excuses this time!

Da Shootz was paired with an Gumbo Pizza, so I was nervous that it might be too spicy for me. But then I worried if it IS spicy, it would just overpower the beer. So the andouille on the pizza was not spicy at all, but still had a lot going on. (Why yes, that's rice on a pizza!)

Gumbo Pizza
Everyone else at my table preferred the big flavors from the Korean BBQ Pizza and Fresh Haze, which was plenty hoppy like an IPA. The Korean BBQ had a marinated grilled flank steak, but also pickled jalpenos and kimchi! A little too weird for me, but good for standing up to the hoppiness.

Korean BBQ Pizza
The Black Butte Porter is a great dessert beer and I don't think anyone minded that it was a repeat. This was probably my favorite pairing with the Warm Maple Pecan Cookie...I had three of them! Patience loved the caramel sauce drizzled over the top. (Not quite chocolate sauce, but still warm and soft!)

Deschutes in Bend, Oregon is definitely someplace I hope to visit in person someday!

PW Pizza Deschutes Pizza Dinner 2017

This was my second time attending a Deschutes PW Pizza Beer dinner and the first one was back in February 2014. http://www.stlcheesegirl.com/2014/02/pw-pizza-deschutes-brewery-beer-dinner.html

While two of them were repeats, there were two new ones to me, and one beer was just released: "Pacific Wonderland", the first beer of the night. Very easy to drink and pairs well with lighter entrees. This was paired with Jalpeno Cornbread.

The next beer, Mirror Pond Pale Ale, was only slightly hoppy, but also easy to drink. It still stood up to the big flavors in the BBQ Chicken Pizza, made with the Honey Wheat Crust.

The Red Chair Northwest Pale Ale had slightly more hops and cut through the goat cheese on the pizza, in addition to all the other flavors going on!

Shrimp Scampi Pizza
I see I enjoyed the dessert course best in the past as well as this night. Well...the first time paired a chocolate mousse and that wins hands down. The Butterscotch Pudding was definitely a good match with the Black Butte Porter, but not enough chocolate for me! hehe

PW Pizza Deschutes Brewery Beer Dinner

The end of January meant the start of another season of beer dinners at PW Pizza and the featured brewery was Deschutes, located in Bend, Oregon. All the more reason to visit the upper northwest, I say!

I was finally smart this time and was able to pace myself through the courses since beer can be so filling and you pretty much can have as much as you’d like for each course. There are even two full pizzas served at each table for the pizza courses so it’s easy to overdo it.

Unfortunately, three of the four beers were way too hoppy…even the first “light” beer, the River Ale, started at 28IBUs. Luckily, both pizzas had a lot of kick to them (first one had roasted garlic while the second one had spicy meatball) to help match up to the bitterness, but it was too much for me.

Easily, my favorite course was dessert: a dark chocolate mousse paired with a Black Butte Porter. It definitely was smooth and creamy like the dessert itself, and yes, we did finish off our neighbor’s chocolate mousse it was that incredible. We ate them so fast, we forgot to take more pictures other than the menu!
